A CARDIFF City player is to help raise funds at a seven-a-side football tournament today for a popular Torfaen teacher who suffered a double stroke.

A fundraising football tournament is being held to raise funds for Paul Scriven, 31, who, after suffering a stroke, can only move his thumb and forefinger

Showing his support is Cardiff City and former West Ham United and Crystal Palace, Danny Gabbidon, from Cwmbran, who is taking part in the tournament.

Mr Scriven was a geography teacher at Croesyceiliog School.

But in January 2009, he unexpectedly collapsed and suffered a double stroke, which left him unable to move or communicate.

Since then a group of friends have been helping to raise money for a trust fund to help make his life a bit more comfortable.

One of the fundraising events is the seven-a-side football tournament called ScrivSoccer7.

The event will take place today, from 10am, at Celtic Park (pitches next to Cwmbran Stadium) and aims to be an event for all the family.

A food and beer tent will be set up and children can enjoy a bouncy castle and face painting.

On the organiser’s Facebook page, it was announced that Goldie Lookin Chain are putting a team together, as well as Olympic Sprinter Christian Malcolm together with Sprinter Kevin Williams.

Joining them will be teams from Gwent Police, Welsh Ambulance Service and Harding Evans Solicitors.

Spectator admission is £1.50 for adults and children are free.
