THE COMMUNITY has come together to create cardboard houses for the Maindee Festival this weekend.

Maesglas Primary School in Newport held drop in sessions from Tuesday to Thursday this week to make cardboard houses for the Maindee Festival as part of this year’s festival theme; ‘right up your street’.

The houses will be carried on bamboo sticks or worn as part of the parade procession and will then be made into a street at the festival.

Alison Starling, secretary of the Maindee Festival Association, said this year would be the 19th year of the annual festival.

“This year’s theme ‘right up your street’ is about a sense of community and belonging which is why we have made the cardboard houses,” she said.

“[A stand out house] is the beautiful stained glass house which is a lot bigger than all of the others.”

The workshops ran by Malarky arts saw over 100 people of all ages take part in building the houses.

Workshops were also held for community artists run by ‘Walk the Plank’ and arts organisation in Salford.

The Maindee Festival Street Parade will assemble at Rodney Parade at 11am and depart at 12pm to arrive at the festival site at 1pm.

Volunteers are needed to carry the cardboard houses to the school; anyone willing to help should meet at the Bisley stand of Rodney Parade at 11am today.
