PUPILS at a Newport primary school took part in an art exhibition and were awarded prizes for their efforts.

The art exhibition was held at St Gabriel's R.C Primary School on Thursday, May 21.

Special guest Jan Martin from Gwent Picture Framing and Gallery at Barnabas Arts House on New Ruperra Road was invited to judge the children's work.

She donated a number of prizes for the children including the framing of a selection of student’s art work and vouchers.

The themes varied within for each year group with the class three consisting of children aged six to eight years old, either working on a dinosaurs theme or a Newport and Wales theme.

Class four, consisting of children aged between eight and 10 years of age, worked on a war and peace theme or the theme Wonders of the World – Peru.

Class five, consisting of children aged nine to 11 years of age, also worked on a war and peace, or Wonders of the World – Egypt.

The chairman of Governors Hilary Cameron said: “It was a great experience to see all the work that had been created by the Key Stage 2 children at St Gabriel's Primary School.

“It was especially interesting seeing all the different mediums of creativity that have been developed by Mrs Williams.

“In our expanding curriculum the place for the Arts must never be under-estimated."
