INVESTIGATIONS have been going on today to determine the cause of a fire that severely damaged a number of vehicles near the Mill Parade industrial estate, in Pill, Newport.

The blaze, reported at around 7pm last night, took around two hours to extinguish, and South Wales Fire and Rescue experts have been at the site today.

FIREFIGHTERS tackled a blaze involving 'a number of vehicles' that left black plumes of smoke near the SDR on Friday night.

At the height of the blaze 17 firefighters were tackling the incident near the Mill Parade industrial estate in Pill.

The fire is believed to have started from a campervan before spreading to a number of vehicles.

Thick black smoke was seen billowing near the SDR and Transporter Bridge, with police closing the roads immediately near the fire as a precaution.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 7pm and left at 9pm.

Crews used two hose reels, two main jets, three pumps and a water bowser to extinguish the fire, before reinspecting the site at 10pm.

Firefighters from Maindee, Malpas, Duffryn and Cwmbran attended the call-out.

Police are not treating the fire as suspicious or deliberate, but are keeping an 'open mind' about the cause of the fire.

A Gwent Police spokesman said that smoke had been billowing up away from the area and that there had been more smoke than flames.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said they were not called to the scene.

Fire service crews have now left the scene but will be reinspecting the site at 10pm.

Police are not treating the fire as suspicious and have closed the roads immediately around the blaze as a precaution.

The fire is believed to have started from a campervan before spreading to other vehicles.

A Gwent Police spokesman said they had cleared the area while the fire brigade were at the scene and that it was not suspected to be deliberate "unless we find something to the contrary".

He added that smoke had been billowing up away from the area and that there had been more smoke than flames.

FIREFIGHTERS are tackling a caravan on fire in Pill.

Police and fire service crews were called to the scene off the Mill Parade industrial estate at 7.03pm tonight.

Plumes of black smoke are drifting across the SDR bridge and near the Transporter Bridge.

Crews from Malpas, Duffryn and Maindee are at the scene.

Simon Oliver said he could see a "huge cloud of black smoke coming from between the SDR bridge and Transporter Bridge."
