PEOPLE using a scenic spot in Abergavenny say they are being abused by drunken yobs.

Families, tourists, ramblers and dog walkers who use Castle Meadows field have told police they have been abused.

Police have cracked down on the anti social behaviour and ran an operation earlier this month, which resulted in alcohol being confiscated, ten referrals for ASBOs and two arrests, one youth was charged with public order offences and another released without any further action.

There were 38 cans of lager, a three-litre bottle of cider and four alco-pops confiscated from the offenders all aged between 13 and 17-years-old.

Someone who uses the green and wants to remain anonymous for fear of reprisals said: "There is a problem of children drinking and abusing people, young people camping, lighting fires, throwing rocks at fly fishermen and women and leaving their rubbish on the river bank.

"I purchased a season fishing ticket for the river this year, but am finding it difficult to fish the river without being abused by drunk children and stoned by them while stood in the river. The badly behaved children of this town are spoiling it for all the families that decide to go down the river for a nice walk."

A police spokeswoman said: "We are fully aware of the problems experienced recently in the Castle Meadows area with regard to anti social behaviour.

"We ran an operation to target these issues. This resulted in large amounts of alcohol being confiscated and a number of referrals being made for anti social behaviour orders and two arrests made for public order offences.

"We will continue to run this operation over the coming weeks."
