SEVENTEEN years ago, Lesley Ilott arrived as a short term supply teacher at a Newport school.

But she never left, and is now preparing to say goodbye as head teacher of St Julian's Infants where she has spent "the happiest years" of her life.

On Friday a surprise celebration was held at the school to mark her forthcoming retirement.

Everyone, except the guest of honour, was in on the secret including parents, children, crossing wardens, community police officers, fellow head teachers and even her husband, Terry.

Youngsters from the school choir together with instrumentalists and singers from the nearby junior school gave stirring performances in a concert in the hall.

Tributes were paid to Mrs Ilott by governor, Richard Baines, who described her as dynamic, and Stafford Sherlock of Newport council's education department.

Afterwards they moved to the school grounds where everyone was entertained at a garden party by St Julian's high school's band and steel pans group - many ex-pupils of the infant school.

A celebratory cake - bearing photographs of every class - was shared out.

"I can't tell you what a surprise it is," said a stunned, but thrilled Mrs Ilott, who added she had felt enthusiastic about the school since she first arrived.

"I can honestly say these years have been the happiest of my life."

She said she had worked with some wonderful children and staff. "It has been a real privilege to be here," said Mrs Ilott, who has never taken a day off ill from her post.

Six-year-old Adam Kempson and Gemma Roach spoke for their schoolmates when they said how much she would be missed.

"I think she's really lovely and I don't want her to go," said Adam.

Gemma added "She's really nice and I really, really want her to stay."

Mrs Ilott who lives in Ponthir, was looking forward to a holiday and spending more time with her family. One of her three daughters is getting married in June and she has two grandchildren due in the Autumn.

Fiona Rutledge becomes acting head teacher when Mrs Ilott, 59, retires at the end of April.
