Having grown up in Newport near the steelworks Angharad believes Wales needs to reverse the 10% drop in industrial production in Wales since 1997. In that time, Angharad points out, 28,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost.

The Communist Party is committed to ensuring that we have an integrated, environmentally sustainable economic and transport policies.

The current reliance on the anarchy of market economics must be reversed to ensure that strategies are developed to meet human needs.

The millions of pounds of public money wasted on the LG calamity show why we need an economic strategy based on public ownership and democratic control.

We propose: * A public transport system. Bringing all rail, bus and air services into public control to develop an integrated transport strategy geared towards people?s needs. Free and subsidised travel should be ensured for people below average incomes and shift the current dependency on cars. We propose developing a unified rail network that links all regions of Wales. There needs to be a massive investment in public transport.

* Public utilities in public hands. To stop big business treating Wales as a bargain basement for natural resources we propose bringing Water, Gas, Electricity and Coal back into public ownership.

* Sustainable energy. We propose a massive investment in sustainable and renewable energy sources including wind, tidal, solar and hydroelectric schemes. To ensure that energy is produced locally and as cleanly as possible we propose the redevelopment of deep coal mining in Wales using clean coal technology. The current attempts by big business to develop environmentally damaging open cast mining should be opposed. These measures need to be combined with a programme of legislation to ensure CO2 emissions are cut through all available technological means. All communities in the vicinity of any energy development should be fully involved in the planning and implementation process.

* An Economic Plan. The lack of democratic control over "fly by night" big businesses is causing mayhem. These firms locate in Wales only when they can pocket substantial sums of public money. But there is no guarantee that they will commit to Wales when labour costs and higher profits beckon elsewhere. This anarchy can only be overcome through tighter controls on big business or through establishing publicly owned and controlled initiatives.
