A DVD recording of a service celebrating the life of Labour Party stalwart Ray Davies is to be sold to raise money for his beloved Bedwas Workmen’s Hall.

Mr Davies, who battled pancreatic cancer, died on May 7 at the age of 85.

A prominent member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Mr Davies was arrested on anti-nuclear protests and was even shot in the head in Palestine while escorting ambulances carrying injured Palestinians in Balata in 2003.

Hundreds attended a remembrance service at the Temple of Peace, Cardiff in July to celebrate the life of the veteran Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen councillor, who has been described by many as a “one-off”.

Among those in attendance were Caerphilly MP Wayne David, Newport West MP Paul Flynn, South Wales East AM Lindsay Whittle and Welsh author Angharad Tomos.

On the request of the family, a professional filmmaker, Marcos Avlontitis, captured the event with three cameras.

This recording is the basis for a DVD, which will also feature a live recordings of songs from the many campaigns Mr Davies was involved in, including Miners Lifeguard, Solidarity Forever, Nkosi Sikelele, Guantanamera and Yma o Hyd.

These were performed by the Côr Cochion choir, who are conducted by Mr Davies’ widow, Wendy Lewis.

Proceeds from the sale of the DVDs will go to Red Ray's Lift appeal, which hopes to make his beloved Bedwas Workmen's Hall fully accessible to the community.

Mr Davies’ widow, Ms Lewis, 59, was moved to do this after members of the family found it difficult to attend Mr Davies’ funeral at the hall.

With no lift in the hall, which was built in 1923, elderly family members struggled to climb the two steep flights of stairs and some even had to be carried up the fire escape.

Speaking about the DVD, whose cover was designed by Mr Davies’ son, Tad, Ms Lewis said: “It looks very good. The sound quality is excellent. It’s an interesting DVD.

“He would’ve wanted us not to grieve…but to carry on his work.

“He covered a huge breadth. Plaid Cymru, the Communist Party, Labour, the Greens, the Socialist Workers Party – not many people get them all in the same room.

“He cut across all borders for the common goal. All the things he did have been a great comfort for me.

“He gave 100% to every campaign and was spread very thin to do all he did.

“I hope this will kick start the fund.”

Until November 31, the DVDs will be available at a special price of £6 plus £1 p+p. For more information and to reserve a copy, ahead of the September release, email wendya.lewis@sky.com or call 07415899661.
