SUPERMARKET giant Morrisons said it is continuing to work on plans for a new store in Abergavenny but would not be drawn on a time-scale for the scheme.

Morrisons was chosen as the preferred developer to build a multi-million pound scheme on the site of the former Livestock Market, which closed in 2013. A new £5million site at Bryngwyn, near Raglan replaced the market.

It originally planned to open the branch last autumn but there is still no sign of construction work having yet begun.

A Morrisons spokeswoman said: “We continue to work on these plans and will provide an update in due course.”

However she declined to give a time-scale for the build or comment further when contacted yesterday (TUE)

Monmouthshire county Councillor Bob Greenland, cabinet member with responsibility for enterprise, previously said that work must start by this autumn if Morrisons is to open a store by next summer.

He said:“Morrisons are due to complete on the contract for the livestock market site next summer. If they are to open a store by then, work will need to commence in the autumn.

Morrisons has less than a year to pay the remaining balance of more than £15million. It has already paid the council a deposit of £1,675,000 on the sale of the site.

The council signed a legal agreement with Morrisons to build a 25,000 square foot store and began clearing the site in preparation for the scheme in March 2014.

The remaining £15,076,000 is due in June 2016.

The South Wales Argus contacted Monmouthshire council for comment.
