A SOGGY August brought below average sunshine and more rainfall than usual for Wales, Met Office figures have confirmed.

But last month's testing conditions failed to significantly effect the Welsh summer as a whole, with the average temperature only a fraction lower than usual, and overall hours of sunshine slightly higher.

The average temperature in Wales during June 1-August 31, the period the Met Office calls meteorlogical summer, was 13.9C , half a degree lower than what was usual for the 30 years to 2010.

This reading made Wales slightly cooler on average than England, but warmer than Scotland and Northern Ireland.

There were 553 hours of sunshine in Wales during that three months, again slightly above the 30-year average.

This rate was above the UK average as a whole  for June 1-August 31 this year (515 hours).

The 305.6 millimetres of rainfall however - primarily due to the wet August - was a little above the 30-year average, and higher than that for the UK as a whole for this summer.
