YOUNGSTERS in Abergavenny learned first hand how a Royal Navy helicopter works.

Children at Deri View Primary were excited to find out that Lieutenant Commander Daniel Clarke was landing the Lynx chopper in the school's sport field yesterday afternoon.

Lt Cdr Clarke has two sons at the school, Alex in year one and George in year five, as well as a niece, Ceri Ellen Price, in year four.

Head teacher Maggie Teague said: "The children watched the helicopter land, and they were very excited. They wanted to know exactly how it worked and what it was used for.

"All of them had the opportunity to go up in it and they asked lots of questions.

The children really enjoyed it. On year five said: 'I think this is the most exciting thing that has happened at Deri View yet'."

The five-tonne Lynx helicopter, which is based in Yeovilton, also landed at King Henry VIII Comprehensive School in Abergavenny, where sixth formers got the chance to ask questions.
