A SWFRS spokeswoman said the property has become too structurally unsafe to continue with the fire investigation at the moment and they are waiting on a structural engineer.

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a house which was "well alight" in Gilwern in the early hours of this morning.

Five fire engines and three jets were used to put out the blaze which started in a two storey house on Crickhowell Road.

Crews from Brynmawr and Cefn Fforest were called at 3.28am and to the ground and first floor of the building which was "well alight" and people were believed to still be inside.

Firefighters searched the property thoroughly but could not find anyone inside. At 4.48am they confirmed no one was inside.

Two water bowsers from Aberbargoed and Cwmbran and one aerial appliance was Malpas was used to fight the fire.

Firefighters were on the scene for six hours. A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue said crews were still at the scene damping down the fire and removing roof tiles at around 7.54am.

Crews are still at the property this morning and have asked for a fire investigation to determine the cause.

A spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said they were called to the scene but no treatment was needed. No one at the house was injured.

The Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue service said the A4077 between Gilwern and Crickhowell is closed.
