ARRIVA Trains Wales is advising customers that rail services into Cardiff will be busy today due to thousands of rugby fans expected- this could mean a two hour post match wait.

Arriva Trains Wales will be providing extra train services and additional seating capacity where possible to cater for the increased demand before the Australia v Fiji match in Cardiff, which starts at 4.45pm.

For fans travelling to Cardiff from Bridgend, Pencoed, Llanharan, Pontyclun and Cwmbran, Pontypool and Abergavenny, these services are likely to be extremely busy by the time they reach these stations.

Arriva Trains Wales are advising customers to catch the earliest trains as possible in order to arrive in plenty of time for the game.
Based on travel demand data and on Saturday evening’s experience , they are predicting around 35,000 people wanting to travel back by train after the match.

They can move on average 10,000 people per hour through their queueing system but unfortunately for some of the busier queues, this could mean up to a two hour wait.

They also advise customers to check the timetable for trains home and to arrive at Cardiff Central Station well in advance of scheduled departures.

The usual post-event queuing management system will be in place at Cardiff Central station after the match, allowing passengers to board their train in the most efficient and safe manner.

Passengers are asked to familiarise themselves with the queueing system map before their return journey.

Cardiff Queen Street station will be closed after 6.30om tonight.

The queueing system at Cardiff will start any time from around 6pm depending on the number of people returning to the station early.

Customer Services Director, Lynne Milligan, said: “We will be adding extra services and capacity where possible throughout the day, however on some services, passengers may have to stand for part or all of their journey.

"We are once again expecting the queues to be very busy especially for Bristol, Gloucester and London services."

She added that there will be lots of capacity available.

"We will work hard to ensure that all our passengers are sent safely on their way by the end of the evening," she said.
