PEOPLE across Gwent are gearing up for the Cardiff Half Marathon this Sunday.

Newport Mind is joining forces with other Mind groups to make an impact in the 13.1 mile run which takes runners past the capital’s most iconic landmarks.

Five members of staff, including the chief executive officer, are raising money to support Newport Mind’s work in the community.

South Wales Argus’ digital editor, Martin Wade will be joining fellow RAF Reservists to tackle the route after being inspired by the death of one of their members' husband.

Mr Wade is part of the team from Cardiff-based Number 614 (County of Glamorgan) Squadron who will be raising funds for Welsh Hearts, the charity who provide defibrillators across the country.

Their decision to choose Welsh Hearts was inspired by squadron member Cathy Sharples, whose husband Mike died suddenly after having a heart attack while they were on holiday in Sardinia.

The Argus’ Monmouthshire reporter, Nathan Briant will also be taking part in his first Cardiff half to raise money for a charity appeal called Bertha’s Army.

The appeal is raising money for Llandough Hospital’s All Wales Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre. It was set up by Beth Clarke, 34, from Abergavenny, who has Cystic Fibrosis and spends time at the centre.

She hopes to raise £10,000 this year for the Better Life Appeal, which in turn aims to raise £1.3million to equip a wing with an extra eight beds at the hospital.

Also running in aid of Bertha’s Army is Jason Price, 47, who is a family friend of Mrs Clarke.

It is his first half marathon, and although hoping to complete the race in less than two and a half hours, he said his main goal is to finish it.

Abertillery-based Tillery Valley Foods (TVF) has joined a confederation of businesses across the UK to raise £1 million for youth charity The Prince’s Trust during 2015.

As part of their efforts, a team of eight colleagues have volunteered to run in the Cardiff Half.

A team from Torfaen Leisure Trust will be taking part to raise money for Tenovus Cancer Care.

Seven people are running the half marathon dressed as giant breakfast items to raise money and awareness for The Wallich’s Rough Sleepers Intervention Teams, which operates in Newport.
