FAIR trade was the order of the day in Abergavenny yesterday as the town hosted an event showcasing local and global projects promoting the issue.

Around 2,500 people attended the Wales Fair Trade Fair last year, and turn-out was up this year over the events' two venues - Brecon Guildhall on Saturday, and Abergavenny's Market hall yesterday.

This was the ninth annual Wales Fair Trade Fair, and as well as a range of community stalls, those in attendance enjoyed dancing and musical entertainment, and varied examples of cuisine from around the world.

Organisers David and Martha Holman worked with Monmouthshire council and Monmouthshire Voices, which aims to give a voice to under-represented communities in the area, to stage an event designed to celebrate the county's diverse and inclusive nature.

Pippa Bartolotti, leader of the Green Party in Wales, and Mayor of Abergavenny councillor Maureen Powell opened the Abergavenny event, and pupils from Llantilio Pertholey primary school performed their fair trade song.

Musical entertainment included Blaenavon Ladies Voice Choir, Zim Voices, Chrys Blanchard’s Abercapella, and African drumming.
