NOMINATIONS to recognise Newport's unsung heroes are now flooding in and Argus readers are being encouraged to share the inspirational stories of local people.

Now in its sixth year, Newport's Night of Honour is all about recognising the work of the city's finest, who often are left out of the spotlight.

Amongst those nominated are local mums, Kylie Coughlan and Aimee Cripps, both age 27, who run Mini Marvels at Maesglas Community Centre.

They were nominated by Newport project support worker, Katrice Perrin.

She explained that the group was set up by the mums after taking part in employment focussed training offered by Communities First, and identifying that their community was lacking provision for parents with young children.

Their first group saw seven adults and seven children attend with each week taking part in different activities. Activities included messy play and sing-a-longs, all organised, prepared and delivered by the pair.

“Due to the hard work and friendly atmosphere created by the two ladies, six of those seven families asked if they could return,” she said.

Since then, the group has gone from strength to strength with over 200 children and parents attending since October 2014.

Ms Perrin said: “The two mums that run the group, Kylie and Aimee, have achieved so much within the last year and we are really proud of their success.

“From an idea that was passed about in a training session to being something that is being delivered every week, which has a waiting list of eager parents, this has been a highly positive and inspiring provision.”

This year's awards ceremony will take place at the Kings Church in Newport on Sunday, November 8.

Argus readers are being encouraged to nominate heroes for three awards, the Heart of Gold Award, Above and Beyond Award and Young Person of the Year.

The Heart of Gold award is local heroes who may be cares for others or who always goes out of their way to help people in need, the Above and Beyond Award, for an individual or business, is for anyone who goes beyond the call of duty and the Young Person of the Year, open to children or teenagers, is someone who has made a difference to their school, activity group or community, whether its raising money for charity, mentoring, motivating or volunteering, their commitment, passion and enthusiasm to see other people excel knows no end.

As well as the publicly nominated awards, Newport communities, in association with Communities First, have also been asked to nominate their community champions, people who work tirelessly in their local areas.

A section of the awards ceremony will be handed over to Communities First to showcase these people.

Entertainment on the night will be in the form of Rachael Roberts, a Shirley Bassey impersonator, as well as local dance groups and the Kings Church team.

Nominations can be emailed at noh@kings-church.org uk, sent via Facebook or by writing to The King’s Church, 71 Lower Dock Street, Newport, NP20 1EH.

Closing date for nominations is Friday, October 30 at 12pm.
