THE fountains outside on the Riverfront Walk in Newport were filled with bubbles last night not long after they were turned for the opening of Friars Walk.

A Newport council spokeswoman said: "Whilst it may seem to be a harmless prank putting chemicals in the fountains at the entrance of Friars Walk to create foam can potentially damage the pumps, leading to expensive repairs that would have to be paid for by Newport City Council through the use of public funds.

"If there are reoccurrences of such actions future repair costs may not be sustainable as there is a limit to what the council can afford in the current economic climate, and may lead to them being permanently switched off. That would be a real shame as the fountains add to the new vibrant feel to the city centre."

She added: "We would therefore ask people to refrain from such actions, and enjoy the fountains without interference for the benefit of all residents and visitors to our regenerated city centre."
