WORK on a major housing development set to comprise 224 homes is to begin next month.

Multi-million pound developer Taylor Wimpey is to build the properties at the site of a former police training centre in Greenmeadow Way, Cwmbran.

Taylor Wimpey said that construction was expected to begin in December with the development set to be completed within four to five years.

About 30 per cent of the homes will be affordable and the first householders are expected to move in in autumn 2016.

Torfaen council planning department had recommended the application for approval and councillors gave the plans the green light on November 17.

A Taylor Wimpey spokesman said yesterday: “We’re delighted to have received approval for our exciting new residential development on the site of the former Police Training College in Torfaen.

“We are now looking forward to beginning work on site in December 2016 and expect to release the first new homes for sale in the third quarter of 2016.”
