A MAN attacked in a Newport newsagents by a knife-wielding robber at the weekend could not believe what was happening to him, he has told the Argus.

The robber threatened to stab the shop assistant, who did not wish to be named, if he was not given money from the till immediately. He later made off with about £100.

The shop assistant had earlier sold him a chocolate bar sometime between 1.45pm and 2.05pm on Sunday – but the aggressor’s behaviour quickly turned and he demanded the money after he was given change.

The assistant said: “A customer came in and bought a chocolate bar and then I gave him the change.

“Then he said: ‘Open the till’. I said: ‘Are you joking with me?’ “And he said: ‘Are you joking with me?’”

At that point the attacker tried to jump over the shop’s front counter to get to the till but failed. He then further threatened the shop worker, who handed over the remaining money in the register.

He said he has now returned to work at the shop he has worked at for two months but that the incident has shaken him.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman confirmed this evening that the force is still investigating the crime.

The man who demanded money is described as white and about 20-years-old. He was wearing a grey and black North Face jacket.

Anyone who recognises him from CCTV images released by Gwent Police are asked to contact the force immediately on 101 and quote log number 243 29/11/15.
