JUDGES today revealed they had selected "The Red Cloud" as the Landmark Wales public art project candidate for the second Severn Crossing.
A bid will now be made for lottery funding for the design, which was submitted by Marks Barfield Architects, the team behind the London Eye.
The judges said it had won huge public support.
Steve Chilton, from Marks Barfield, said: "Our piece has impact, scale and, I believe, natural beauty.
Our proposal is about making a bold statement and creating something which clearly impacts on the landscape of Wales, and says to visitors and returning Welsh alike: You've arrived, welcome."
Landmark Wales plans to mark two other main entry points into the country - the A550 in Flintshire and Holyhead Harbour - with "iconic cultural" images.
The other candidates are A Postcard to Wales, by Tonkin Liu for Flintshire, and Y Tri Maenhir, by Ian Ritchie Architects for Holyhead.
Landmark Wales will bid for £13 million, out of an £18 million budget, from the Big Lottery Fund.
