THE first day of the new year was a busy one on the maternity units at Gwent's two hospitals.

CHRIS BINDING and ROBBIE MANN went along to meet some of the new arrivals.

FIRST to arrive in Gwent in the new year was Rogan Bailey, who was delivered to Simon Bailey, 37, and Jade Bailey, 32, from Abergavenny at 1.13am, weighing 7lbs 3oz.

Manufacturing operator, Mr Bailey, said: “We only live up the road and came in at around 11.30pm on New Year’s Eve.

“I feel amazing and blessed but at the same time, completely exhausted.

“We have the perfect little family now.”

The labour was a “simple” one according to new-mum Mrs Bailey, and “was a lot easier and quicker” than when she gave birth to daughter Freya, now aged three.

She said: “We decided to call him Rogan because it means ‘red haired one’ and Freya is waiting at home to see her little brother.”

Meanwhile at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, Theo Evans was the first baby of the new year arriving at 2.11am weighing 5lbs 14oz.

First-time-mum Tula Davies 18, of Dol-Yr-Eos, in Caerphilly, was accompanied by boyfriend of two years Dale Evans, 21, as she endured five days of labour.

She said: “Giving birth was overwhelming, emotionally and physically, but it was so worth it in the end and thankfully, we have made an amazing start to 2016 and are now really looking forward to taking him home.”

Second to be born at the Royal Gwent was Woody Mayer, who arrived into the world at 7.30am weighing a healthy 7lb 3oz.

Delighted new mum Natasha Barrett, 27, of Chepstow Road, in the city, who has been with partner Dominic Mayer, 27, for three years, said they decided to name him Woody because of their love for actor Woody Harrelson.

Ms Barrett, an assistant manager at Claire’s Accessories in Spytty, said: “I’m a massive fan of True Detective and ultimately, we wanted to name him something that isn’t as common as other names.

“Midwives expected Woody on Christmas Day, but amazingly he arrived on New Year’s Day and now shares the same birthday as his auntie, so now we have even more reason to celebrate the New Year and we are so blessed to have had such an amazing start to the year.”

New Year celebrations didn’t stop there, as experienced parents, Sam and Tom Horsfield, both 29, had their sixth child.

Mr and Mrs Horsfield, of Williams Close, Pill, Newport who have been married for five years and have been together since they were 16, brought baby girl Aubree into the world at 10.10am weighing 6lb 15oz.

Mrs Horsfield, who was in labour for five hours, said: “We gave Aubree the middle name ‘Faith’ as our youngest daughter had faith in us that we’d give her a sister to play with.

“It feels lovely to have given birth to a child born in the New Year and we have started 2016 in the best possible fashion and now we are looking forward to taking her home so she can meet her five siblings.”

Natalie Skinner, 28, and Richard Davies, 28, also became parents on Friday, welcoming their son Thomas-John Ieuan Davies at 2.25am, weighing 8lb 13oz.

As the newborn was two days overdue, Ms Skinner had an emergency caesarean section, with Thomas-John being held in a neo-natal ward.

Ms Skinner said: “he went straight up to special care and I haven’t even had the chance to hold him yet.

“He is waiting for his blood tests to come back to see if it is something to do with his sugar level before he has his first feed.”

Ms Skinner named the newborn after her brother and great granddad “Thomas” and her grandfather “John.”

She also claimed the emergency operation was needed because the umbilical cord was wrapped around Thomas-John’s neck and body.

New-dad Mr Davies said: “It has been a mixture of excitement and shock as when you told your baby has stopped moving your joy disappears.”

Arianne Azadegan, was delivered at 2.48am on New Year’s Day to Chris Azadegan, 31, and Jade Azadegan, 33, of Ridgeway, Newport, weighing 9lbs and 8oz.

Dental nurse, Mrs Azadegan was 12 days overdue and was booked into be induced at Nevill Hall Hospital at 3pm on Thursday, 31st of December, 2015.

Mrs Azadegan was ”tired” and “relieved” that there were no complications.

Three-year-old Sapphire was also “very excited about being a big sister” and couldn’t wait to go back home with Arianne.

IT analyst Mr Azadegan was born to a Welsh mother and Iranian father and stated that the name was chosen to reflect this.

He said: “The name is a derivative of ‘Arya’ which means ‘of the original Persian race or people.'

“The name means a lady of the original Persian race.'"

He added: “I’m absolutely lost for words.I see it as a new chapter in both of our lives.”
