NEWPORT East AM John Griffiths has spoken of the importance of the caravan sector to the area’s economy.

The Labour AM met with representatives from the National Caravan Council earlier this week to find out about the value of the industry to Newport and the wider Gwent area.

A report published in 2014 showed a third of holidays in Wales are spent camping or in caravans and the sector is worth £299 million to the country’s economy every year.

Mr Griffiths said: “The caravan industry is an integral part of our local economy and I want to do all I can to support it to ensure it can deliver more jobs and opportunities for my constituents.”

The organisation’s deputy director general Alicia Dunne thanked Mr Griffiths for his support.

“Already there are well over two million caravan holiday trips each year,” she said. “If we can increase this in Wales we can support Welsh industry and bring additional income to many areas, particularly rural and coastal ones.

“Similarly, residential park homes offer a unique and affordable housing choice for thousands of people across Wales and working with the Welsh Government and local authorities we can help make this a more accessible housing option and lifestyle.”
