THE early signs of abuse must be spotted to reduce the number of children taken into care, according to the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

It has been reported that the number of children brought into care is higher in Wales than in England and with 150 children for every 10,000, Torfaen has the second highest proportion in the country.

An NSPCC Cymru spokesman said: “To reduce the number of children in care in Wales the NSPCC feels that it is essential for multi-agency professionals who work with children and families to spot the early signs of abuse and neglect, and provide the right support to prevent the problems escalating to needing the support of social services.

“Neglect is the most common reason for a child to be on the child protection register or be taken into care and we are pleased to be working with Welsh Government to prevent child neglect from escalating

“The NSPCC is committed to protecting children from abuse and neglect, through working with families in need of support and helping children rebuild their lives when they are the victims of abuse.”
