A NEWPORT man has vowed never to buy a Dolmio sauce again after almost swallowing glass he said was buried in his spaghetti bolognaise while his two step-children waited for theirs to cool down.

Steven Payne, 19, from Alway, thought the sharp piece was an onion when he took the first bite out of his dinner but got a shock when he pulled out the shards from his mouth.

There was no crack in the jar but the shop fitter believes the glass came from the sauce.

Mr Payne, a shop fitter, purchased the jar of Dolmio sauce for pasta bolognaise with chunky mushroom from Tesco in Spytty Retail Park a week ago.

A lover of pasta, he had bought the same sauce many times before but said he will never have a Dolmio product again for fear of his step-children, aged one and four, choking in a similar incident.

He said: “My partner cooked it and we were waiting for the kids’ to cool down and I started eating mine.

"I bit a big chunk and I thought it was an onion but it was really hard and crunchy.

"At first, I still had the other half in my mouth and then I pulled it out. It’s cut the side of my tongue, it was extremely painful. I’m just glad I had it and the kids didn’t.

“I’ve always had Dolmio, but I wouldn’t touch it again and I wouldn’t put in in front of the kids again. If they managed to get glass in their product, what else is in there?

“There’s nothing wrong with the actual jar, there’s not a single crack in there.”

On behalf of Dolmio, a Mars Food spokeswoman said: “The safety of our consumers is our number one concern and we take every complaint very seriously.

“We have asked Mr Payne to provide us with information about the product so that we can carry out a full investigation into this matter.”
