Ivy and Wilf Moore have just celebrated will be celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary.

The couple married 60 years ago on May 26, 1947 at Bethal Hall Chapel in Pontypool after what has been described as a whirlwind romance. Within six months of meeting in the December of the previous year they had become engaged and married.

Wilfred, now aged 87, was born in December 1919 in Oakfield in Cwmbran to Jack and Lillian Moore, one of nine children.

His first job was in Whitehead Wire Works and then he moved on to Weston's biscuit factory before he was called up for the Army in April 1940 and he served until May 1946.

He returned to work in Westons and it was there that he met Ivy.He then moved on to a job in the steel industry where he stayed for 31 years until he took early retirement in 1978.

Ivy, now 86, was born in June 1920 to William and Annie Jones in Blaendare Road in Pontypool and was one of seven children. She gave up work in Westons when their three children, Colin, Terry and Sandra, came along. When the eldest reached the age of 15 she returned to the biscuit factory as a cleaner and then took up a job as a kitchen assistant at West Mon School.

Their first house was a prefab on the Polo grounds in New Inn. For the last 20 years they have lived at Cwmynyscoy. They now have ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The couple celebrated with their family.
