AN APPLICATION for one solar farm in Caerleon has been permitted, while another nearby has been refused.

Members of Newport City Council’s Planning Committee visited the two sites to the west of Park Farm off Malthouse Lane on Monday, February 8, before voting on the applications.

They decided to permit the application for a 9.34-hectare farm, which will generate enough electricity to power 1,375 houses, but turned down a second application for a nearby 11.19-hectare site.

The second scheme, which would have generated enough electricity to power 1,200 homes, was refused on the grounds that if the two applications, both of which were made by renewable energy firm Lightsource SPV 212 Ltd, would have an unacceptable impact on Park Farm Cottage and the ‘green wedge’ – a predominantly rural area of countryside north of Caerleon and east of Bettws.

A previous version of this article stated the first application had been refused. This was incorrect. The Argus apologies for the error.
