The woman driver was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital for a check-up, after suffering a concussion, and her injuries are not life changing according to a Gwent Police spokesman.

A CASUALTY has been taken to hospital after a car “burst into flames” following a crash on the B4235 Usk Road between Chepstow and Usk.

The two cars collided at the crossroads by the Huntsman Hotel on Usk Road at around 1pm.

Police, two rapid response vehicles, an ambulance and a fire crew from Chepstow all attended the scene.

The road was closed between Weyloed Lane and Ditch Hill Lane for around two-and-a-half hours, but is now open again.

An eyewitness at the scene said: “There was a car that was on fire with smoke billowing from it when the police arrived, which then burst into flames.

“It was the car that was travelling from Usk to Chepstow that burst into flames and it spun the other car around and hit the side of an old building, which was a black shed.

“The B4235 is a very dangerous road. There are accidents waiting to happen.”

The eye witness has called for a new 40mph speed limit to be introduced on the road, which currently has a 60mph speed limit and double white lines.

Residents in Mynydd Bach, a village near the B4235 Usk Road, have been petitioning for a lower speed limit on the road for the past four years.

The most recent accident on the B4235 took place on July 18, involving a motorbike, where a man was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital for treatment.

Graham Down, councillor for Shirenewton, said the installation of white lines was a “waste of money” and has reiterated calls for a 40mph zone to be introduced from the old council houses on Usk Road all the way to Chepstow.

He said: “Apparently, it doesn’t comply with statutory guidelines. If that’s the case, the statutory guidelines are stupid.

“It should be 40mph, there’s no doubt about it. There’s an advisory 40mph for part of the way but it should be a mandatory 40mph.

“It’s quite absurd. It’s a very dangerous road for motorcyclists in particular – we’ve had a number of fatalities of motorcyclists.”

The Argus previously reported that Chepstow officers had been working with Monmouthshire County Council's Highways Department and the “Go Safe” team in Gwent Police to try and raise awareness of road safety along the busy road.
