The man who died in the crash in Caerleon has been named by police as Thomas Lawrence from Caerleon.

The 16-year-old girl from Pontypool who was injured remains in hospital in a critical condition.

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police confirmed that the girl is still in a critical condition and that they were continuing to work with the man's family.

Mr Horton explained some of the dangers they often face on the hill: “We have to park our cars at the bottom of Belmont Hill and walk down as we don’t have a drive.

“Walking down the road with intermittent pavement is so dangerous and after my wife was nearly knocked down last year I tried to excavate my own drive so we could park outside."

Belmont Hill resident Alan Horton, 66, said: “It’s amazing someone hasn’t been killed on this road sooner because all of the accidents that happen here.

“I heard the sirens last night but didn’t want to go up there because I thought standing an watching it would be a bit ghoulish.

Alan's wife Brenda, 61, said: “I knew that this was going to happen.

“This road is extremely dangerous and we have to listen for traffic when we exit our house as there is no pavement — I was almost knocked down two times last year.

“I heard the sirens and when I went to bed at 1am the roads were still shut.”

Jim Sullivan a 72-year-old retired technician lives on Belmont Hill and said the road was very icy night last night.

He heard the siren of a police car go past and thought "blimey that sounded quick".

He said: “I took my camera and went up the hill and couldn’t believe my eyes as the whole car park at the King’s Arms was filled with emergency vehicles.

“People on this road call the place ‘Hell Hill’ as it is very dangerous and it was a very icy night last night.

“You could tell how bad the crash was as when the ambulance left it moved very slowly down the hill.

“I’m extremely sorry for the parents of the man involved in the crash.”

A Wales Ambulance spokeswoman confirmed the crash happened outside the Kings Arms in Caerleon.

She said: "Three rapid response units, a specialist heart unit and two ambulances attended."

UPDATE: 7.19am

A spokeswoman from Gwent police confirmed the crash happened at 11.10pm last night.

She said a 21-year-old man from the Caerleon area was pronounced dead at the scene and a 16-year-old girl from the Pontypool area had been taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital with serious injuries.

She added: “Specifially trained officers are supporting both families.”

The road has now re-opened and anyone with information should call 101 quoting log 534.

Witnesses said that the Ford car hit a tree at the top end of King's Arms car park.

They stated it "somersaulted and landed back on its wheels".

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a “serious” crash in Caerleon last night.

Malpas and Maindee crews were called to the crash at Belmont Hill, Caerleon at 11pm
