Bron Afon's head of community housing Liz Evans said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of our tenant. Bron Afon staff were quickly on the scene last night to give assistance to the police and fire service on site. This will continue over the next few days when we will also be in the community to give any support needed to his neighbours.”

Gwent Police confirmed that the man who died in last night's fire was 70-years-old.

The spokeswoman said the man was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital but sadly died.

She added they were called at 6.55pm last night to a report of a fire on High Street, Abersychan.

She said the Police and the Fire Service investigation continues and they are currently not treating the incident as suspicious.

Witness Mr Bennett, who would not give his first name, said: "My wife and I were watching TV in the small room and didn't realise what was happening.

"I got up to check and blinds and I saw something flashing.

"I thought it was the gritters as they flash their lights. I looked outside and I saw a police car across the road which was cordoned off.

"They must have been here for about three to four hours easy. A smaller ambulance stayed later than the rest of the emergency services too."

One resident across the street, who did not want to be named, said: "I went to visit a friend to see if she was ok in one of the neighbouring flats.

"The police warned residents that they should be ready to evacuate if needed but that was in the worst case scenario."

UPDATE: 10.23pm

Phillip Pinches, group manager for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service, said they rescued an unconscious elderly man from the bedroom area of the flat. He said the large fire was in the bedroom of the flat and it was very heavily smoke logged.

The man was taken outside where the ambulance service carried out first aid but later died.

Mr Pinches said: "Our thoughts are with the family."

He said the rest of the flats in the block were evacuated at the time as a precaution.

Fire investigation officers are currently investigating the cause of the fire.

The flat where the fire took place was a Bron Afon home.

UPDATE: 9.50pm

A man has died following the flat fire.

South Wales Fire and Rescue personnel at the scene confirmed the death.

The man is said to have been in his 60s.

UPDATE: 8.09pm

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said an ambulance has taken one person to the Royal Gwent Hospital.

They were called around 7pm this evening.

7.50pm

FIREFIGHTERS are currently in attendance to a flat fire in Abersychan.

They were called at 6.54pm to a fire in a ground floor flat on High Street.

Crews from Blaenavon, Abersychan and New Inn are in attendance.

Gwent Police and the Welsh Ambulance Service were also at the scene.
