A family hit by a disastrous flood from a burst water main say the clean-up operation is likely to last three months.

The relentless surge of the flood "devastated" the house owned by Simon and Nicola Weaver in The Alders, Llanyravon.

The couple and their two children, Amy, 14, and Laura, 11, are preparing for a lengthy stay in a nearby hotel as insurance investigators establish the full extent of the damage.

Thousands of gallons of water tore through the garden and into the house in the early hours of Saturday, causing an estimated £100,000 worth of damage.

Three of the family's cars - a Vauxhall Corsa, a Mercedes 190E, and a Renault Espace - have been written off.

Insurance investigators visited the property at the weekend and removed contents affected by the flood, such as electrical goods, furniture and carpets.

Yesterday, Nicola Weaver, 37, said: "I only came by yesterday to pick up a few things and it's heartbreaking.

"Everything has been ripped out of the house.

"The insurance people check the foundations, they have to dry everything out. I don't think we'll be able to move back in until September."

Welsh Water staff are continuing to use industrial machinery to repair the water main, which is located in a bank behind the house at the side of the A4042.

The company apologised for the incident, the cause of which is still unknown, and has agreed to pay the Weavers' hotel bills.
