A PETITION calling for a noisy Monmouthshire road to be resurfaced has been launched.

Monmouthshire County councillor Sara Jones, who represents the Llanover ward, launched the online petition on Monday days after fed-up residents living alongside the A40 at The Bryn, near Abergavenny, told the Argus they have endured eight years of constant horrendous noise.

Villagers claim their lives are being blighted by noise from the busy trunk road between Raglan and Abergavenny and last week renewed calls for the road to be resurfaced with a quieter coating called whisper asphalt.

Cllr Jones, who launched the ipetition on Monday, is calling for the Welsh Government to replace the old concrete surface, built in 1981, with whispering tarmac.

In her petition, Cllr Jones criticised the Welsh Government for the lack of progress in resolving the problem, despite repeated calls from residents.

The petition, which has already gained more than 40 signatures, calls for the road to be given immediate priority, ‘given the numerous concerns raised from both public and representatives and that it has been identified under the existing Welsh Government Noise Action Plan.’

Andrew Sheasby, who has lived on Bryncelyn Close at The Bryn for 12 years, is among those campaigning for action.

He said the noise from the road is 'horrendous' and fears it will only get worse once the Heads of the Valleys Road scheme is finished and the traffic increases.

Mr Sheasby said residents, together with Llanover Community council, Monmouth AM Nick Ramsay and MP David Davies were led to understand that resurfacing of the A40 would take place subject to budget availability.

A Welsh Government spokesman said the resurfacing of the A40 at The Bryn is being considered for funding during the 2016/17 noise reduction programme and a decision will be made later this month. To find out more visit
