HUNDREDS of families made the most of the bank holiday yesterday and joined in Easter activities across Gwent.

Cwmbran animal sanctuary All Creatures Great and Small, which could be forced to close because of lack of funding, said they hoped yesterday’s Easter egg hunt will help their fundraising campaign.

The charity yesterday opened its doors to around 500 people for the hunt, which also featured bric-a-brac stalls, a raffle and other children’s activities.

Matt Nicholls, business development manager at the charity, said: “It’s been fab.

“It’s been an amazing day today. The public turnout has been fantastic.

“We had at least 150 children. We even had to turn some away because we were inundated with people wanting to do the Easter egg hunt.”

Animals at the sanctuary might have to be rehomed or even put down if the sanctuary does not raise enough money to keep open. The charity, based in Llanfrechfa, fears it has only three months to survive.

Mr Nicholls said yesterday: “It would appear we have taken quite a bit of money and that’s what we want.

“I think the weather definitely helped and the appeal has also helped, very much so.”

The Roman Legion Museum in Caerleon was packed full to the brim over the weekend with families.

An Easter egg hunt was held on Sunday and yesterday visitors saw Roman soldiers and made Easter crafts.

Victoria Le Poidevin, who is in charge of events at the museum, said: “This is our fourth day of events going on and we have been really, really busy over the weekend which has been lovely.

“It’s been really amazing, with some nice and some interested people coming through.

“For sheer volume it was busiest on Sunday; we had 160 through the door in a half hour which is quite a lot for the size of the museum.”

Also in Gwent visitors to the Celtic Manor made Easter bonnets while Blaenavon’s Big Pit held an Easter quest.
