Clive Book, Wales & West Utilities Head of Emergency Service said:

“We were alerted to reports of a gas explosion at a house on George Street in Newport yesterday evening and immediately sent Emergency Engineers to the scene. They made the gas supply to the property safe.

“Our engineers have now left the site in the hands of the police, and we are working alongside them and the fire service to investigate this incident. However, at this early stage it appears to be related to internal gas pipework and not our gas network.

“The mains gas network and the supply of gas to other homes and businesses in the area was not affected by this incident.”

Update: last night

A HOUSE in the centre of Newport has exploded in what police have said was a gas blast.

Four crews of firefighters are currently at the house on George Street, Newport opposite St Joseph's boxing club.

People living in houses nearby were evacuated to the leisure centre while crews cordoned off a safe area around the house.

Wales and West Utilities said the explosion appears to have been caused by the internal gas pipework in the house.

Jordan Reynolds, from Newport, said he and another man rescued a man who was inside the house by dragging him out of the front window.

He said: "I was in my car driving to my mum's and I just saw the house to the right side of me just blow up. The front went everywhere.

"There was only one person in the room where the main blast happened but there were people in the top flats and next door

"The explosion was very loud and scared me but I shot into action and started getting people out.

"The man must had been in his late 30s. I hope the man recovers from his injuries."

One Newport woman, who did not want to be named, said her uncle owns the house which exploded, which he rents out.

She said: "Apparently the neighbours pulled off the wood planks from the window and pulled out someone."

Clive Book, head of emergency service for Wales and West Utilities, said: "We were alerted to reports of a gas explosion at a house on George Street in Newport and immediately sent emergency engineers to the scene.

"We are working alongside the fire service and police to first make the gas supply to the house safe and then to investigate this incident.

"However, at this early stage it appears to be related to internal gas pipework and not to our gas network.

"The mains gas network and the supply of gas to other homes and businesses in the area has not been affected by this incident."

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue said the cause of the blast is under investigation and the road is blocked off.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 7.32pm.

At around 10pm, one eyewitness said people were slowly being moved back into their homes.

Jennie Griffiths, head of the fire service control, called it a "serious" incident.

In a video recorded by eyewitness Chris Sexton shortly after the explosion, ambulances, fire engines and police can be seen at George Street.

In the video, which has been muted, Mr Sexton said: "This is the scene on George Street, bit of a mess.

"I only just came through and came back and it was like this. Debris all over the road, blown all across the road. Absolute mayhem down here."

Another man added: "I was driving round here and the car actually shook. It was that bad."
