A QUICK thinking five-year-old called an ambulance for his mum after she fell unconscious on the settee in their New Tredegar home.

Mum Sarah Ring had been unwell for a few days in late February with a serious bout of flu which rapidly worsened, rendering her unconscious on the settee.

When youngster Junior Phillips couldn’t wake his mum, he rang 999 and was told to go to the house next door to get help.

“I really felt ill and hadn’t felt anything as bad as that before. I went for a lie down on the settee hoping to feel better after a short nap, but the next thing I knew I was waking up with a paramedic by my side," she recalls.

“I just can’t believe he did and that he remembered what I’d taught him a couple of years ago.”

She added: “It’s fantastic to think that if I’m ever seriously ill again, I’ve got no worries if Junior is around.”

The pair were invited to the Welsh Ambulance Service clinical contact centre in Cwmbran to meet emergency call-handler Nicola De-Gare Pitt, who presented Junior with a special certificate.

Ms De-Gare Pitt said: “We do have emergency calls now and again from very young callers, and Junior was the perfect caller. I’m so proud of him. He’s my little superhero.

“It’s lovely to meet Junior and know that because of his call the story has a happy ending and that we were able to help his mother.”
