UPDATE: Wednesday, 6.55am

Head of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service's control Jennie Griffiths has revealed on Twitter 40 calls were received yesterday reporting the fire.

UPDATE: Tuesday, 3.57pm

Gaer councillor Mark Whitcutt said he “totally condemned” the actions of whoever started the fire.

He said: “It’s very unpleasant for the people who lives close by and again it’s also a potential risk

“Basically, it’s the danger to life and limb and the risk of injuring those close to who started the fire and also anyone unfortunate enough to be at the scene when they started.

"If you start a brush fire, it’s extremely difficult to put out and there are a number of properties that back onto what is known colloquially as the Golf Links.”

Following a spate of grass fires across Gwent last summer, Councillor Whitcutt said he hoped it was not a sign of things to come.

He added: “I hope not. It has happened in the past but I think the important thing is to try to catch the perpetrators.

“It’s extremely dangerous.”
