THE new head of Wales’ medical profession has been named as Dr Frank Atherton.
In his new role as Wales’ chief medical officer Dr Atherton will be responsible for providing independent professional advice to ministers and the cabinet on health matters and will also lead the medical profession in Wales, which will involve having a key role in medical regulation, education and training, standards and performance.
He said: “I am delighted to be appointed as the next Chief Medical Officer for Wales.
“The nation faces both huge challenges and exciting opportunities for better health and I regard it as a great privilege to be given this opportunity to lead the efforts to develop a healthier Wales.”
Dr Atherton, originally from Lancashire, is currently deputy chief medical officer of health in the department of health and wellness in Nova Scotia, Canada, a post he has held since 2012.
He replaces Dr Ruth Hussey, who retired last month, and will take up his new role later in the summer.
