BUSINESSES and council officers are working together to improve Newport’s Grade II listed Market Arcade.

Last month the Argus reported a crowdfunding campaign had been launched to raise cash to spruce up the arcade between High Street and Market Street.

And now Newport City Council has met with owners of a number of the properties in the arcade to find a way forward.

The council’s cabinet member for regeneration and investment Cllr John Richards said support may be available to business owners to improve the area.

“Seeing Market Arcade fully utilised would also make it a more pleasant environment for visitors and other businesses in the city centre,” he said.

“I hope this will encourage the other owners to come forward and work with the council.”

He also called on Damien Harvey of charitable fund InspireHubs, who set up the crowdfunding campaign, to contact to the council so they could work together.
