TWO Magor residents cycled 200 miles between Wales and Ireland to raise £3000 for a homelessness support charity.

Ben Thomas, 28, and his sister-in-law Alice Parsons, 24, rode the distance between the Principality Stadium and the Aviva Stadium to raise money for Shelter Cymru.

Digital marketer Ben and Alice. a registered nurse in Birmingham's Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and thirty others made the trip on road bikes.

They pair were also present at the Magor May Fayre last week, helping raise further funds for Shelter Cymru on a cake stall.

Mr Thomas said: “This is a subject close to us because many people are only one wage packet away from poverty and homelessness.

They are also planning to take part in next year's 'Ride to the Rugby' which will cover the 300 miles from Cardiff to Paris for Wales' game against France.

Last year's 'Ride to the Rugby' for Shelter Cymru raised £96,000 overall, with all proceeds helping the charity's work to put and end to homelessness in Wales.

According to Louise Bennet, head of fundraising at the charity, nearly £200,000 have been raised from these events over the last three years.

Mrs Bennett said: "This year’s event was as successful as ever and we are truly grateful for the commitment and dedication of all the riders who braved the elements and cycled over 200 miles from Principality Stadium in Cardiff to Aviva Stadium in Dublin for the Six Nations clash.

"Everyone loves rugby here in Wales therefore we wanted to develop an event that offers people an opportunity to watch Wales play whilst raising money to support families here in Wales at risk of losing their home."
