A CAR-MAD Cwmbran schoolboy is continuing his bid to become Formula One’s first deaf racing driver by following in the footsteps of his high-speed heroes.

Caleb McDuff, 8, is currently tackling courses up and down the country in the MSA Bambino Karting Championship – where the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button earned their stripes.

The Nant Celyn Primary School – who was forced to have cochlear implant surgery following a succession of ear infections four years ago which left him profoundly deaf – only started competitively kart racing two years ago.

He has enjoyed a meteoric rise, being voted ‘most improved driver’ in his first season, and nominated by the public for the Deaf Sports Personality of the Year 2014 in the young player of the year category

His dad, Ian, who has supported his son’s love of cars from a young age, said: “It’s been a remarkable journey for him and he has achieved so much.”

Now eight, Caleb has recently graduated to tracks that also saw world championship runner-up David Coulthard race in his youth.

Caleb has also secured sponsorship from various businesses thanks to some impressive performances in the high-octane sport – despite unable to wear his implants during races because of his protective helmet.

His dad, who owns Pontypool’s French Auto Solutions, is hoping to secure further sponsors to help him continue competing at the highest level though.

Mr McDuff said: “We are really grateful for the way that the local community and local businesses have supported him too.”

The young driver has recently received supported from a Gwent-based legal firm who were inspired by Caleb’s story in overcoming adversity to follow his dreams.

Ashley Harkus, managing partner at Everett Tomlin Lloyd and Pratt, said: “We have always been supportive of local sports, and of young people from the area with ambitions.

“Caleb’s story is truly inspiring, and we are proud to support him in this way. We wish him every success as he competes in this year’s championship.”
