A NEWPORT music promoter who was friends with The Clash's Joe Strummer has a new exhibition of punk memorabilia.

Jonny Perkins is described as the man who “brought punk music to south Wales” and gave the Police their first gig in Newport.

Mr Perkins, who started off being a DJ in a Maesglas youth club, went on to promote The Jam, Generation X and the Stranglers and can even name The Clash’s Joe Strummer as a friend.

His new exhibition, at micro arts centre Cwtsh at Stow Hills, is based on In It 4 The Crack – a website and book he has written about the music scene in Newport and his career as a promoter, manager and DJ.

The new exhibition includes updates and comments from In It 4 The Crack as well as posters, photographs and other memorabilia going back to the 1970s.

It is the latest showing of Mr Perkins’ memorabilia, after a similar exhibition held at the Riverfront theatre in 2011.

The exhibition will run until Sunday, May 29 at the Cwtsh arts centre on Stow Hill.
