A NEWPORT group sent off more than 1,100 shoeboxes to Turkey.

The city's Shoebox4Syria appeal group collected 1,169 shoeboxes filled with toys, colouring pencils, colouring books, toys, tooth brushes, and sweets after open days were held in two local mosques and a church in Maindee.

Members of the community also helped out and dropped off their own shoeboxes to the open days at Jamia Mosque, the Masjd at-Taqwa mosque and the Community House Eton Road church.

A spokeswoman from the appeal said: “We are very proud of the people of Newport.

“We came together from different backgrounds and did an amazing job.

“We would like to thank everyone who took part in helping with the appeal.

“That means there will be over 30,600 smiling kids on Eid.”

Empty shoeboxes were supplied by Newport schools, businesses and shops, including St Woolos Primary School, Clytha Primary, ABC Taxis, Debenhams and Next Retail.

The boxes were sent to Cardiff on May 19 and have travelled to London before being shipped to Turkey with other shoeboxes that have collected across the UK.
