A PILL woman is holding a series of fundraising events in order to raise the £3,000 she needs for a new wheelchair, after she outgrew her old one.

Ayesha Khan, of Pillgwenlly, was born with spina bifida and has used a wheelchair all her life.

The 20-year-old, who was once of the faces for the Sparkle Appeal - a charity which supports families with disabled children - held a home-made bake sale at Pill Millennium centre today (Thursday, June 23).

She is also holding a fair at Newport City Church on Saturday, June 25) to contribute towards the £3,000 needed for her new chair.

Ms Khan said she held the bake sale from 10am to 2pm on her own, and many people came in to buy her cakes.

She said: “It was a bit quiet in the morning but then it started to pick up. I definitely don’t think I’ll raise the money from the bake sale alone, and maybe not even from the bake sale and the church fair.

“I am having to do lots to raise half of it and it will take a lot of events to get the full amount but I will be so happy when I get my new wheelchair because I am so squashed at the moment.”

Ms Khan is currently a young leader and representative for Wales at the charity Whizz-Kidz, who aim to transform the lives of disabled children by providing them with equipment, support and life-skills.

“As a Kidz board member I'm just like the young people's voice if they have an issue that is affecting them at club I can take it further and sort it out for them," she said:

Ms Khan’s next fundraiser will be at Newport City Church on Mill Parade tomorrow from 2pm to 5pm and will have entertainment for all ages, along with refreshments and a raffle.
