WHAT a great result for Newport.
The city is to have a fanzone on Friday so people of all ages can join together to watch Wales in the Euro 2016 quarter-final.
The news comes a day after this newspaper called for just that to happen, and follows a series of telephone calls over the weekend from Argus editor Kevin Ward to key figures in the city.
Rodney Parade will host the fanzone on Friday, staging the event in partnership with the city council and Newport Live.
We are delighted with the result – and we are sure the fanzone will be hugely popular.
There has been a real will to get this organised so quickly, and huge credit is due to new council leader Debbie Wilcox, Newport Live chief executive Steve Ward, Rodney Parade head of operations Mark Jones and their teams.
Now we just need the people of Newport to support the fanzone.
It is in a great location, close to the city centre and on all main bus routes – the perfect place to cheer on the national team as they attempt to make history against Belgium and reach the semi-finals of a major tournament for the first time.
Job done. As we said yesterday, let’s have a party.
