ADDITIONAL boulders will be put in place at the Newport International Sports Village site in Spytty after large amounts of rubbish were left behind by a group of travellers.

The group of around eight or nine have now left the site but were situated behind the stadium and adjacent to the velodrome for around a week. Newport Live, the charitable trust running the city’s sports and leisure centres, have been carrying out a clean-up operation and staff have already filled one and a half 1,100 litre Eurobins.

Neil Sargeant, operations director for Newport Live, said: "There was an enormous amount of rubbish. I would say 1,500 litres plus.

"We were on the case very early and have dealt with the majority if it but there is still some to do today.

"It was all sorts of rubbish - you name it - toys, nappies, food waste, cardboard, metal, even car parts."

The sports village is hosting Olympic training camps this week with a host of Great British athletes due to attend.

Mr Sargeant said: "It was certainly not what we wanted our general day to day valued customers to see or Olympic and Paralympic teams. We wouldn't want anybody to see that.

"We will have additional boulders on the site this week to protect that particular area in the future. We've done what we can to protect the site and we're not far off travellers viewing the site as being unsuitable. "
