JON Parkin insists he will have no problems adjusting to life at Newport County AFC after a spell out of the Football League with Forest Green Rovers.

The giant centre forward scored close to a goal every other game during his two seasons in the National League – a strike rate that would delight the Rodney Parade faithful.

County, however, must get by without Parkin for the first week of the new term as he serves a three-match ban carried over from last term.

The 34-year-old accepted a violent conduct charge from the FA for a foul committed during the National League play-off final in May – the challenge went unnoticed by the referee at the time.

The chance to join a League Two club this summer was one the former Cardiff, Preston, Stoke and Hull striker couldn’t turn down, and he reckons making the step back up from non-League won’t be too difficult.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in the Football League so coming back into it won’t be an issue,” he said.

“I don’t know if there is a massive gulf between League Two and the National League anyway.

“Teams that come up always seem to do alright in league Two and I’ve played enough games at various levels to fit in.”

He went on to add: “I’ve only been in a couple of weeks but everyone seems to be getting on which is a massive part of achieving things.

“There will be times when everyone needs to roll their sleeves up and help their mates out, and if you’ve got a good team spirit it’s worth 12-15 points a season.

“All the lads have played together in pre-season so you know what each other’s strengths are going to be.

“Hopefully whoever is playing will have an understanding of each other and we can score plenty of goals and make it a successful season.”

Parkin’s suspension means he misses the season opener against Mansfield on Saturday, next Tuesday’s EFL Cup tie with MK Dons – both of which are at home – and the trip to Leyton Orient four days later.

He will then be available for selection for County’s showdown with Luton at Kenilworth Road on August 16.

Commenting further on his decision to sign for the Exiles, Parkin said: “The gaffer knew my situation at Forest Green and rung me up to see if I’d be interested.

“I was interested straight away and it was another chance to play in the Football League that was the main draw.

“I’m really enjoying it. Obviously pre-season is tough but it has been good to get some work done.”
