A GROUP of Caerphilly shop workers have raised more than £2,000 doing a charity walk in support of a colleague who got diagnosed with cancer.

Emma Griffiths and Anne-Marie Evans came up with the idea of raising money and doing a fundraising 10 mile walk as a way to help friend Kath Braddon, who was diagnosed and lost her partner Adrian Wall to cancer in the same year.

The 10 mile walk took place last Saturday, September 17, with 17 local friends and family coming together to take part. From starting at the One Stop shop they all work at in Abernant Road, Markham, they then visited two other shops as part of the walk.

Ms Evans, 43, said: “We just wanted to do something to give something back as she has been through enough and to raise so much is really surprising.

“Everyone has chipped in, my 11 year-old niece Summer James walked with us from Blackwood and in her bucker alone as £120. We do a lot of little fundraising but this is a big one and Velindre were really good with the buckets and their support.”

The pair originally targeted £400 and have said that they are so overwhelmed with the response received that they are going to consider doing an annual fundraising for Velindre.

Media-shy Ms Braddon, 45, said: “I am overwhelmed with supportive they have been and it’s been overwhelming.”

From starting at 9am in Markham they walked down to the One Stop shops in Fleur-de-Lis and Penllwyn, finishing at 2pm. On the day itself they raised nearly £200.

Mrs Griffiths, 35, said: “We had members of staff from the different One Stop stores around Blackwood walk with us on the day and they are really good like that.

“Kath joined us from Blackwood, it was a lovely walk and to see how successful it has been is absolutely amazing. We had a real mix of friends, family, colleagues and children helping out on the walk and it was showed good public spirit.” To donate, visit http://bit.ly/2d2JldX.
