THE Penallt Art festival enjoyed another strong showing as it returned to the village over the weekend.

The four-day festival, which is organised by local not for profit art group Art in Penallt, welcomed hundreds of visitors across the festival's three days of events.

The opening night saw Capel Pentwyn packed with visitors to preview the work of 27 artists and sculptors, including several top names both locally and nationally.

The work of Monmouth School pupils were displayed on Friday evening during the 'Peg it Up' exhibition in Babington Meadow Arena.

Across the weekend, more than 500 visitors attended further exhibitions from the likes of Richard Wills and Walter Keeler, who gave presentations under canvas at the Babington Arena due to inclement weather.

According to Art in Penallt's Alastair Robertson, one of the weekend's highlights was a portrait by Virginie Hartley of Sue Kedward and 'Big Dave' from the local Waitrose branch in Monmouth, two popular local figures who Mr Robertson praised for having 'wonderful good humour and courtesy'.

The Art in Penallt team are 'delighted' by the sales, which will help fund future exhibitions and contribute to donating to their chosen charities for 2016, Babington Meadow and Bridges in Monmouth.

Alastair Robertson, one of group's members, said: "Bringing great art to rural communities is not an easy task but this team have cracked how to do it and six years on it is going from strength to strength."
