A CWMBRAN man has been jailed for three years after sexually assaulting a teenage girl.

Adam Watkins, from the Hollybush area of Cwmbran, was found guilty at trial for the charge of engaging in sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16, Cardiff Crown Court heard on Friday.

The court was also told how Watkins attempted to get her to perform a sex act on him.

Tracey Lloyd-Nesling, defending, said: “The defendant has asserted he’s of previous good character.

“In all circumstances what your honour is dealing with is a complete aberration and something that is completely out of character for the defendant.

“Although he must be punished this must be taken into account.”

In sentencing him, Recorder Greg Bull QC said that Watkins, 33, showed “no remorse” for his actions, and had insisted on pleading not-guilty, which had a further emotional impact on the victim.

Despite acknowledging his previous good character, he also stated that the defendant’s offending was “so serious” that a custodial sentence should be enforced.

“Why you committed the offence we will never know,” he added.

Watkins was sentenced to three years in prison, a victim surcharge of £170 and a sexual harm prevention order, preventing him from living with children. He will also be listed for 10 years on the sex offenders register.
