ASPIRING architects from Gwent schools were recognised for their creativity in a competition hosted by local estate agents Roberts & Co.

Gwent-based Roberts & Co launched a competition for schools to build 3D models of their ‘dream house’ with a £1000 cash prize for the winner and £500 for the runner up. The competition was launched by the company to raise awareness among young people around what buying a first home entails.

A panel of judges sized up entries from 10 schools that entered, taking into account aesthetics, presentation, mechanisms and circuits and the quality of instruction. The panel included representatives from Newport City Council, Butler Wall Homes, ITV News and South Wales Argus editor Nicole Garnon.

At a prize-giving ceremony at Rodney Parade, Usk Church in Wales Primary took the top prize followed by Trinant Primary School as runner up. Other schools taking part included Shirenewton, Undy and Ponthir Church in Wales primary schools, and primary schools from Rogerstone, High Cross, St Julians, Langstone Primary and St Woolos.

A Roberts & Co spokeswoman said: “Funding is often limited for our local schools and we really wanted to give something back to the community but at the same time make the competition fun and educational for the children.

“It’s shame we couldn’t have 10 winners as all of the designs were absolutely outstanding.”

She added: “The event has been a great success and we hope to make this an annual event. Thank you to everyone who entered and took the time to make the event such a wonderful day.”

All children at the event were given complimentary tickets to see the Gwent Dragons play on December 16.
