A FULL meeting of Newport City Council due to be held today has been cancelled.

The full council meets about once every two months, with the most recent meeting held on Tuesday September 27.

But the meeting scheduled for 5pm this evening has been cancelled.

This means when the full council next meets on Tuesday January 31, it will be four months since it last met.

A council spokesman said leader councillor Debbie Wilcox and councillor David Fouweather met last week and agreed to cancel the meeting.

“All decisions taken since the previous council meeting were executive in nature and not requiring council approval,” she said.

“No councillor had tabled any resolutions for debate and there were no written questions submitted for cabinet members.

“No formal business was therefore programmed for the council meeting of December 6."

She added: “The business of the council of course continues, but most decisions are now taken by way of the executive or statutory committees, all of whom meet in public.

“The leader and deputy mayor concluded that owing to the lack of formal business the council meeting could be cancelled on this occasion.”

All meetings of the council's various committees and it's Labour-run cabinet are open to the public, with most held at Newport Civic Centre.
